Flouride – Nature’s Cavity Fighter For Good Oral Health

By: Dr. Rajan Sharma

Fluoride is an effective weapon against any dental problems like gum disease, infection. It is often given the nickname of “nature’s cavity fighter” for its tremendous potential in improving oral health. One can appreciate the potential of fluoride in preventing cavities in both children and adults. A naturally occurring mineral makes the enamel’s outer surface resistant to acids that play a major role in tooth decay. This is why the dentist near you would always recommend fluoride toothpaste during the oral check-up.

Fluoride Toothpaste is Important:

Since the introduction of fluoride toothpaste, there has been a significant decrease in cavities for the last 5 decades or so. Toothpaste with fluoride is considered to be responsible for a significant drop in cavities since 1960. One should always purchase fluoride toothpaste with the ADA seal of acceptance. This means that you are purchasing toothpaste with fluoride content.

Tips to Follow:

Brushing should be done twice a day in the morning and after dinner. Do consult your dentist regarding this.

  1. Start brushing the teeth of children as soon as teeth appear
  2. Use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste for children in the age group of 3-6
  3. Keep an eye at the time of child’s brushing to regulate the amount of toothpaste
  4. Ensure the child spits out toothpaste and doesn’t swallow it.

Fluoride Mouthwash is Important

Fluoride mouthwash will make your teeth highly resistant to decay but caution to follow. Make sure that any children six years or younger shouldn’t do fluoride rinse unless recommended by a dentist near you. Younger children below the age of 6 are likely to swallow the mouthwash as their swallowing reflex or capability isn’t fully functioning or developed.

What is a Fluoride Treatment?

A dental clinic near you would provide fluoride treatments. This could come in different ways like varnish, highly concentrated rinse, gel, foam among many others. The treatment could be done with the help of elements like mouthwash, swag, try or brush. You can expect more fluoride content in the treatments than the water or even your toothpaste. It would take a few minutes for the procedure to be completed. You would be cautioned to avoid eating food or drinking liquid for at least 30 minutes. This is done so that the teeth fully absorb the fluoride. Do inform your dentist about the full dental history like any treatment or procedures undertaken in the past.

How Much Does an Average Fluoride Treatment Cost?

Usually, dental Insurance offers coverage for fluoride treatments for children. Overall, adults may have to shell out $10 to $30 out of their own wallets. This could rise depending on one’s oral health. It’s important to consult your dentist regarding the costs before initiating the treatment.

How Much Fluoride Everyone Needs?

We will go by the American Dental Association (ADA) recommendation. They ask individuals to undergo a professional fluoride treatment at a period of every 3, 6, or 12 months. The schedule for the treatment will factor in oral health. If you show the risk of developing cavities, you would be using a special fluoride rinse or gel in the comfort of your home.
